Central Arkansas Water: Steward of Lake Maumelle

The lake we sail is the water we drink.

Lake Maumelle is the source of clean drinking water for more than 500,000 people in Central Arkansas. The water we sail on today is the same water that flows into our homes and sustains our community. Protecting that resource is the mission of Central Arkansas Water (CAW), which owns and manages the lake and its surrounding lands.

CAW balances its responsibility for safeguarding this vital water supply with allowing compatible recreational uses, like sailing, that build appreciation for the lake without compromising water quality. Since 1959, the Grande Maumelle Sailing Club has worked under CAW’s stewardship to ensure our sailing activities align with this mission. We lease our property from CAW and work closely to protect and enhance both the club facilities and the lake we call home.

GMSC’s Role in Supporting Stewardship

Together we:

Educate members and guests on CAW lake rules to support safe, responsible recreation.
Participate in annual lake cleanup events to reduce pollution and protect water quality.
Share club resources with CAW to support projects that benefit the lake and surrounding lands.
Maintain and improve club property and infrastructure in ways that respect CAW stewardship goals.

This partnership is essential to our mission. By working with CAW, we help ensure Lake Maumelle remains safe, clean, and welcoming for sailors and the entire Central Arkansas community.
