The Flying Scot: A Versatile Sailboat for Racing and Recreational Sailing

The Flying Scot, an 19-foot centerboard sloop, is a revered sailboat in the sailing community. Created by renowned sailor and designer Gordon "Sandy" Douglass, it has captured the hearts of sailors for over six decades.

Built with a fiberglass hull, the Flying Scot offers a perfect blend of durability and lightweight construction. It features a raked stem, a plumb transom, and a transom-hung rudder controlled by a tiller. The retractable centerboard, weighing 105 lb, provides beaching versatility and access to shallow waters. The 1200 lb. boat is easily launched and trailered by a small vehicle.

Equipped with an aluminum fractional sloop rig, the Flying Scot offers strength and flexibility on the water. The boat delivers excellent maneuverability with a draft of 4 ft when the centerboard is down and a draft of only 8 inches when the centerboard is up. The Flying Scot supports a 191 sq. ft. sail area with main and jib and flies a spinnaker of 200 sq ft under class rules. A boom vang and mainsail roller furling are permitted. The rigging is relatively simple, and the class rules discourage complex setups. Safety is paramount in the Flying Scot's design, featuring foam flotation for buoyancy and stability in case of a capsize.

The Flying Scot excels as a high-performance racing boat and is ideal for family outings. Its spacious and comfortable seats accommodate up to eight people, making it the perfect family boat. Flying Scots race with a crew of 2-3 people. The stable hull design and simplified rigging cater to sailors of all ages and skill levels, offering exciting racing and leisurely cruises.

With over 6,000 boats built, the Flying Scot has a rich history and a dedicated following. The Flying Scot Sailing Association (FSSA) plays a vital role in promoting and supporting this beloved sailboat. With a vast network of fleets and regattas, the FSSA unites passionate sailors worldwide. The association's commitment to the one-design principle ensures the Flying Scot remains a valuable investment, maintaining its popularity and resale value. Whether seeking thrilling races or memorable family adventures on the water, the Flying Scot is prepared to embark on countless remarkable journeys.
