Commodore's Corner
Dear GMSC,
If you've been out to the club lately, you've seen Kiko's Corner under construction. Thankfully our seawall project should be complete within the next week! A month from now there's some scuttlebutt that water levels should be returning to normal. This has all worked out favorably and we hope to get things back to normal by time our centerboard season starts in May!
Currently lake levels are at historic lows down around 80ft on the Natural Steps gauge. Many boats are grounded and all docks are experiencing issues which require us to use caution when traversing them. If you have difficulty walking on uneven surfaces, please don't descend down the ramps. They are very steep. As water levels come back up, we will need to monitor docks to ensure foam segments return in place properly. If you need help repositioning foam, please reach out. If lost, replacing foam may be problematic. We aim to replace any lost foam with encapsulated segments. They can be costly and not all dock fingers can accommodate standard encapsulated foam sizes. Prevention is key. Strap them in place.
Thankfully we were able to race Sunday. Many brave souls navigated a race course with some of the strongest winds we've experienced. At one point near the windward mark, a few crews had difficulty tacking in wind over 30mph. We completed one race and called it a day. I am thankful there weren't any serious accidents or injuries. A testament to the skill and ability of our race crews and race committee!
Be on the lookout for a date to commission the Kiko's Corner Seawall. In the meantime, get registered for the Spring Regatta, get ready for Spring Fling, and prepare for our start back to centerboard racing. We welcome back the Thistle fleet and encourage other established fleets to participate as well!
There are a few key roles we hope to hand off mid-year. Some roles are nuanced and need some hands-on training. Current Regatta Chair Roger O'Quin is ready to train his replacement. We also need a new Social Committee co-chair and new Harbormaster! If any of these roles interest you, please contact me so we can get you involved!
Fair winds and following seas. See you at the lake!
