Adult Introduction to Sailing class
About this event
Introduction to Sailing Course will be conducted on 19 ft Flying Scots and smaller keelboats.
A social hour/chalk talk on Friday night will give you the opportunity to meet the other class participants and help us understand your experience level and discuss goals for the class. We will spend a short time reviewing concepts and also telling you more about the sailing club.
Friday’s events will start at 6:30.
Saturday morning we will meet at 9 am. After checking in we will split the class up into different boats. The morning will cover rigging the boat, leaving the dock, learning to steer the boat, and learning how the sails are adjusted to the various points of sail. You will switch boats and instructors for the afternoon session. During the afternoon we will become more comfortable with steering and changing directions. We should finish around 4:30 pm.
Participants will need take an online overview course before hand. Go HERE to get to the course. You will also need to bring your own lunch Saturday.
Give yourself at least 25 minutes to get there from midtown. The address is 12000 Maumelle Harbour Road, Roland, AR, 72135. Exit off of Hwy 10 when you see the sign for Grande Maumelle Sailing Club and Westrock Landing Marina. You will soon see Westrock Marina on the left, and a stone and metal gate on your right. Turn right on that road and continue thru the gate until you see the lake again. Turn right and head thru the parking lot and a pavilion will be on your left. Park close by but do not park blocking someone’s boat.
Please bring the following on Saturday:
-Water or sports drink to take on the boat
-Sunscreen, hat with brim if you have one
-A pfd/life-jacket if you have one. If you do not have one, please let me know ahead of time so that we can borrow one for you.
-Non-marking shoes such as topsiders or tennis shoes with a light/white sole. This is to keep from leaving scratches or black marks on the boats.
-Sunglasses and keepers (you don't want to lose them)
-Your clothing may get wet. Some people prefer fabrics that are quick dry or wicking.
-Your lunch - we will take a lunch break on shore, so you can keep your lunch in a cooler in your car. No need to pack it for the boat.
It's too early to know what the weather will be, but we are able to sail in most conditions, including light rain. We will move to the clubhouse if there is lightning.
